LOS ANGELES, CA (January 22) – Golden Boy Promotions, one of the world’s leading boxing promotional companies, is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached to promote undefeated Mexican boxing sensation and WBC Youth Welterweight World Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who will seek a world title shot at 147 pounds in 2010.
The multi-fight agreement between Golden Boy and Alvarez was signed today during a press conference in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico, the hometown of the promising Aztec boxer, and where he has fought numerous times, transforming himself into the sport’s most promising Mexican fighter.
“I want to show everyone that I will be a World Champion and that I’m ready to fight the best fighters in the world,” said Saul Alvarez. “The opportunity to work with Golden Boy is definitely one that I could not pass up as I feel it will help me achieve my goal of reaching my full potential as a fighter and becoming a huge success in boxing.”
“This is a very important moment for Golden Boy Promotions,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Saul is an idol throughout Mexico because he has incredible natural boxing talent and a charismatic personality to go along with it. This signing of Saul Alvarez is something that will lead both Saul and Golden Boy to continued success in boxing in the United States, Mexico and around the world.”
“We have been working with Golden Boy Promotions for many years going back to the days when they promoted Oscar “Chololo” Larios and we are very happy that Saul Alvarez’s career will be guided by this influential company,” said Alvarez’s manager Jose Reynoso.
At just 19 years old, Guadalajara’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) has quickly become the most talked about young Mexican boxer today. He compliments his natural boxing ability with devastating power, an extremely hard work ethic and an encyclopedic knowledge of boxing. His fiery style in the ring and trademark red hair have earned him the nickname “Canelo” which translates to Cinnamon in English. Canelo’s most notable victories include an April 2008 TKO win over Gabriel Martinez to retain his WBA Fedecentro Welterweight title, a unanimous decision win over then undefeated Euri “Million” Gonzalez in February of 2009 in which he retained his NABF Welterweight title and captured the WBO Latino Welterweight belt and an August 8, 2009 win to capture the WBC Youth Welterweight crown with a second round knockout over Russian Marat Khuzzev. In his most recent fight on December 5, 2009, he won a unanimous decision over American Lanardo Tyner to retain his NABF Welterweight title.
A date and opponent for Canelo’s first fight with Golden Boy Promotions will be announced soon. For more information visit www.goldenboypromotions.com or follow Golden Boy on Twitter at www.twitter.com/GoldenBoyBoxing.
