LUCAS MATTHYSSE RETURNS TO THE RING TO FACE FORMER WORLD CHAMPION DEMARCUS CORLEY
LOS ANGELES – Following his controversial split decision loss to Zab Judah in November, top junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse demanded a return to the ring as soon as possible. On Friday, January 21, he gets his wish when he takes on former World Champion DeMarcus Corley in the 10-round main event of HBO Plus’ “Next Boxing Generation” at Polideportivo Vicente Polimeni in Mendoza, Argentina.
In the co-featured bout of the evening, WBA Junior Flyweight Interim World Champion Juan Carlos Reveco will face Nicaragua’s Miguel Tellez in a non-title 10-round flyweight bout.
The evening of boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Arano Box Producciones, will air live on the HBO Plus service in Latin America beginning at 9:00pm ET (11:00pm local time). In the United States, the TeleFutura broadcast which features Matthysse vs. Corley will begin at 11:30pm ET / PT (10:30pm CT). The doors open at 8:30pm and the first bell rings at 9:10pm (local time).
Currently ranked fourth in the world by the WBO and eighth by the IBF, Trelew, Argentina’s Lucas Matthysse (27-1, 25 KO’s) is eager to get back in the win column and erase the memory of the official result of his November fight with Judah. The powerful Argentinean, whom Judah tabbed as the hardest puncher he ever fought, dropped the former World Champion and almost knocked him out before losing a disputed split decision in Judah’s backyard in Newark, New Jersey. The defeat was Matthysse’s first in his stellar six-year professional career. As he begins 2011, he is vowing not to let the judges get involved in his fights ever again.
A former Junior Welterweight World Champion who has been in the ring with the likes of Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Miguel Cotto and Marcos “Chino” Maidana, DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley (37-15-1, 22 KO’s) is no stranger to traveling abroad to fight, as he has competed in Ukraine, Russia and Argentina over the last two years. On January 21, he returns to the country where he battled Argentinean Maidana in a close, 12 round decision loss last August, but this time, he’s planning on returning to the U.S. with a victory.
A native of Mendoza, Juan Carlos Reveco (25-1, 15 KO’s) will represent his hometown when he takes on Miguel Tellez in a non-title bout. Currently the WBA Junior Flyweight Interim World Champion, Reveco is enjoying his second reign atop the division following his previous stint as champion in 2007. Reveco will be looking to put on a show for his local fans against the veteran Miguel Tellez.
Managua, Nicaragua’s Miguel Tellez (19-13-1, 6 KO’s) is a no-nonsense fighter who is willing to scrap with the best fighters the game’s lower weight classes have to offer. A former Nicaraguan Champion, Tellez challenged for the Minimumweight World Championship against Ivan Calderon in 2006, and is eager to reach those heights again. Before he does, he must deliver an upset victory over Reveco on January 21.
“Next Boxing Generation,” which was launched in August of 2008 by Golden Boy Promotions in association with HBO Latin America Group, features the top up and coming Latin American fighters in boxing today in exciting bouts that will appeal to fans across all demographics. The series has seen fights take place throughout Mexico as well as in Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, the United States and Uruguay.
